The Government of India continues its mission to modernize and simplify road transport across the nation. In this direction, the FASTag Annual Pass has been introduced, effective from 15 August 2025. This initiative aims to ease travel for frequent highway commuters who often face the inconvenience of paying tolls repeatedly during long journeys.

What Is the FASTag Annual Pass?

The FASTag Annual Pass works as a yearly subscription plan that allows drivers to make up to 200 trips in one year without needing to stop and pay at toll booths each time. It is particularly beneficial for people who travel frequently whether for business, work, or family visits between cities.

Price and Validity

The government has fixed the price of the Annual FASTag Pass at ₹3,000 for one year. The pass permits 200 total trips annually, averaging around 16–17 trips per month. Once the annual limit is reached, a new pass will need to be purchased for continued use.

Key Benefits of the FASTag Annual Pass

  1. Time Saving: Drivers no longer need to wait in long queues at toll plazas; they can pass through the FAST lane directly.
  2. Fuel Efficiency: Reduced stopping and starting lowers fuel consumption and vehicle wear.
  3. Financial Advantage: Regular highway travelers can save money compared to paying tolls individually each time.
  4. Environment Friendly: Smoother traffic flow helps reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

Where Is the FASTag Annual Pass Not Applicable?

Although the scheme brings convenience, it currently has certain limitations. The Annual Pass is not valid on several major national highways, including:

  • NH 44 – Srinagar to Kanyakumari
  • NH 19 – Delhi to Kolkata
  • NH 16 – Kolkata to East Coast
  • NH 48 – North-South Corridor
  • NH 27 – Porbandar to Silchar
  • NH 65 – Pune to Machilipatnam

Travelers using these routes must continue to use their regular FASTag balance.

Expressways Where the Pass Is Not Valid

The Annual Pass is also not accepted on several major expressways, including:

  • Delhi–Mumbai Expressway
  • Mumbai–Nashik Expressway
  • Mumbai–Surat Expressway
  • Mumbai–Ratnagiri Expressway
  • Chennai–Salem Expressway
  • Delhi–Meerut Expressway
  • Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway
  • Eastern Peripheral Expressway

Why Is the Pass Not Valid Everywhere?

Different highways and expressways are managed by various authorities and operators. Some fall under state governments, while others are managed through public-private partnership (PPP) models or private developers.
As a result, toll rules and fee structures vary, making it difficult to implement a single unified pass nationwide. Currently, the Annual FASTag Pass is valid only on highways managed directly by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Travel Planning Tips for Drivers

  • Always check whether your travel route falls under the Annual Pass coverage.
  • Visit the official website or helpline of the respective highway authority for updated route details.
  • Maintain sufficient balance in your FASTag wallet if your route includes non-covered highways.
  • Keep some cash or alternative payment methods handy in case of technical issues at toll plazas.

Future Expansion Possibilities

At present, the Annual FASTag Pass is available on selected routes, but the government plans to expand its reach in collaboration with state authorities and private operators. The goal is to make this facility available across most highways and expressways in the near future, ensuring smoother and more uniform toll experiences for all drivers.
